I was having a conversation the other day with a friend about the legendary Will Smith. We were chatting, and my friend mentions “Is there any genre that Will Smith has not yet performed a role in?”
After a few minutes of thought, my mind went blank. I could not think of a single genre Will Smith had not played a role in!
Think about it…comedy, action, romance, adventurous…Will Smith really can do it all.
That conversation led me to do some research on Mr. Smith to find out exactly what has allowed him to see such an extraordinary amount of success in show business. Will has a lot of funny little sayings and quotes that he credits his success to and he has some interesting life philosophies.
In this article, I share 7 of the former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s greatest quotes on success:
1. “The things that have been most valuable to me I did not learn in school.”
Will Smith is stating something that I think we all need to take a moment to think about. Society today puts the emphasis that school is THE place for learning and you will learn your most valuable skills and knowledge while attending a formal institution.
The problem with this, is that we tend to neglect learning from other sources. Life lessons and the opportunity to learn are always all around us, no matter where we are or how old we are.
School tends to be a place where we learn some basic stuff to get us started.
But the truly valuable lessons of life are typically learned outside the classroom. Don’t miss these lessons by shutting out informal learning opportunities.
2. “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned to buy things they don’t want to impress people they don’t like.”
Here’s what I believe Will Smith is saying: Too many of us will literally go into debt to impress other people. We take out huge mortgages and massive lines of credit for houses and cars that we hope will make us look “cool”.
We men are especially competitive and we like to out-compete the guys that we have a particular envy of. We strive to prove something to people we don’t really like because we want to appear superior to them.
We don’t actually want the big houses or the fancy cars, and we especially don’t want the debt. But society has deemed these things important and we do want to prove our superiority buy having these things.
Will Smith says this is what is wrong with the people of our world.
3. “Where I excel is ridiculous, sickening, work ethic. You know, while the other guy’s sleeping…I’m working.”
I added this quote here because it shows that the really successful people took no shortcuts.
Many people think Will Smith and his fellow superstars simply “got lucky” or caught some breaks, but in reality they worked their asses off and persevered until they found some success. Then they kept working until they found more success.
They didn’t make excuses and they didn’t waste time. They had a goal and a vision and they simply out-worked all the people whom weren’t willing to do what it takes.
As Gary Vaynerchuk says, “There are no shortcuts!”
4. “The first step is you have to say that you can.”
If you are reading this website, you believe in the importance of your mindset.
Before you can accomplish anything, you have to believe that you can do it. Believe in yourself and believe in your abilities.
You don’t have to be the strongest or the smartest; But you do have to believe you can do it and say you can do it. Tell yourself you can do it.
Don’t take my word for it…just listen to Mr. William Smith.
5. “I want the world to be better because I was here.”
The people who are real difference makers go to their grave having made the world a better place. They impacted the world and other people and made progress in the greater picture for mankind.
They built innovations, created world-class companies, and led the charge forward.
People whom come to mind are Steve Jobs, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, and Leonardo De Vinci. These people all made the world a better place and them having been here had a massive impact.
Just imagine life without some of these people’s inventions. It would not be as good, huh…?
6. “Whatever your dream is, every extra penny you have needs to be going to that.”
This is a phrase you will from many entrepreneurs. Building a company is hard and takes years of persistence, and tons of money and energy.
Whatever your ultimate life dream is, you should be investing in resources that get you closer to making that dream come true. Your extra money should go towards investing in your future.
Don’t sit around and save your whole life for no particular reason. Invest, invest, invest. Someday, you’ll get a return on the investment. When you have extra money lying around, ask yourself, “What can I buy that will get me closer to achieving my ultimate dream?”
7. I’ve never really viewed myself as particularly talented. I’ve viewed myself as slightly above average in talent.
I think it would be a pretty unanimous vote to say that Will Smith is a pretty talented fella. Not many people could argue with that statement.
But interestingly enough, Will Smith does not consider himself extremely talented. He does not credit his natural talent as his reason for his success.
Instead, he credits his hard work and persistence. He found a passion and worked like a dog until his dreams came true. You don’t have to be talented from birth to be successful. Wherever you are now, you can use your work ethic and achieve your goals by sheer force and will power. And by never giving up, because you’ll eventually get there…

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”
Whether it’s refraining from eating that slice of pie, or spending 30 minutes reading instead of watching How I Met Your Mother re-runs, do it. And HIMYM is a fantastic show, so I know this may be difficult! 😉
