The 5 Keys to Becoming More Productive

If there is one thing we are short on these days, it is time. We could all use a few extra hours a day to get all the little things done in our lives that we never seem to have time for.

Unfortunately, the case is this: We are all given 24 hours every single day. Not a minute more, not a minute less. We all choose to do with those hours whatever we please and what we put into those hours, we tend to get out.

I understand that getting productive and mastering the area of time management in our lives is extremely important. This is why I took the time to study up on it and brought in a few experts to share with me the secrets to becoming extremely productive.

Someone once said, “Master your time, and you master your life”. I love that quote because when it comes down to it, that’s exactly what life is made up of: Time.

Here are the 5 most important lessons you must understand about time management and how to use them to become extremely productive:

1. Understand there will never be enough time in the day to do everything

Listen, there will always be something more for you to do. There will never be a time in your life when you come to a point and say “Hmmm I finished up my work. I don’t anything I can do for the rest of the day. I guess I’ll go home now.

As an entrepreneur, you’ll always have something else that you can do.

This may be difficult for you to understand.

2. Have an amazing morning

I’ve had a hard time understanding the importance of a good morning, and I know I’m not alone.

The majority of America spends their morning doing stuff that does not prepare them for the day to come.

They wake up, hit the snooze button a few times, take a long shower, watch the morning news, drink some coffee, think about the dreadful things they have to do that day, think about the annoying people they have to talk to that day, and put themselves in a bad mood. ETC. ETC. ETC.

Listen, as much as we all hate to believe it, our days are decided by how we spend our mornings.

The first hour of your day is the most important of the day. Here are some ways to spend it that will start your day right:

-Smile in the mirror

-Listen to upbeat music

-Listen to a motivational tape

-Talk to your family about what you’re excited about

-Think about what you’re excited about

-Think about one great success you had the previous day

-Envision yourself succeeding that day

-Spend a few minutes meditating

-Write in a journal

-Go on a jog

-Go to the gym

-Cook a nutritious breakfast

-Read an inspirational book

Find something that get’s you in the right mindset and inspires you to work hard in the coming hours.

3. Do the most important things first

As we established above, we have so many tasks that we want to do and not enough time in the day. How do we handle this situation and be successful?

Well, we handle it by doing the most important things, and having the less important tasks take a back seat.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time studying productivity and time management lately. I read “Becoming the 1%: How to Master Time Management & Rise To the Top” and had the opportunity to interview the author, Dennis Crosby. Dennis shared with me a lot about mastering your time and becoming productive, but the most valuable piece of advice he shared with me was this:

The most important work tends to be the hard work that we want to put off until the end of the day. It’s imperative that you do what you can to fight off this urge, and get it over with.

4. The most important work is the work that has a direct impact on your ultimate goal

Through my studies, I’ve learned that the most important things are the things that have a direct impact on your ultimate goal.

No matter what you are striving for, it is imperative that you measure what impact each task and project has on your ultimate goal. And you need to isolate time for the things that measure the greatest results.

If you are working to build an amazing body, and the most important thing to getting fit for you is building six pack abs, then you need to do an ab workout before you do anything else. If you are working to build an amazing body, and the most important thing to getting fit for you is building six pack abs, then you need to do an ab workout before you do anything else.

If you are an entrepreneur building a company, chances are the goal you are working towards and creating profits for your business. So your most important tasks are the things that have biggest, most direct impact on your revenues.

5. Focus on one thing at a time

Why do so many people insist on multi-tasking these days?? Let’s be honest, we are all guilty of it. But in my studies, research, and conversations with successful business people, I learned that multitasking is actually counter-productive.

Instead, focus all your energy on the task at hand. When the task at hand gets 100% of your focus, your quality of work is much better. You can’t afford to produce below average results nowadays, and that’s what you’ll get if you only submit part of your attention to a task (i.e. multi tasking).

FOCUS. FOCUS. FOCUS. Pick the most important thing you can being at any given moment and give it 100% of your attention.

Quick Tip

Do your most important task of the day first thing. Don’t waste time putting off the hard work to do low return work. Get the hard stuff done first and see the rewards.
