If you’re reading this, then I’m going to assume 2 things…
- You have a son or daughter that recently graduated from college
- They have the itch to start a business or you are encouraging them to start their own business
Since you most likely fall into these 2 categories, I’m going to speak directly to you. If you do not fall into these categories, then this article is not for you. We have plenty of other more general pieces of content on this website that you can benefit from.
As the parent of a recent college graduate, you are most likely looking to help your son or daughter get into the best position possible to get their career and life launched. And you recognize that the job market is decreasing as more and more jobs are being outsourced, and the jobs that are available are not necessarily in an area that your young adult is passionate about, nor do they compensate well. Not to mention, they’ve got a little bit of the entrepreneurial itch.
Now, there is nothing wrong with going to work for another company when you get out of school. Many of you probably feel that will be the safest route to encourage your kid towards, since it can lead to a steady, lasting career. But as I mentioned before, less and less quality jobs are available for inexperienced workers, meaning you’re kid could end up on you’re couch for quite some time. They don’t want that, and let’s be honest….neither do you!. It seems setting up your own shop is becoming a more appealing option to more and more young people.
But how your son or daughter compete with tech hubs like Google, Yahoo and Facebook..? How can a young person fresh out of college possibly create something that sits in the same waters as these giant hubs? Well, first of all let’s back up a minute…
There are endless types of business that can be started, and not all of them have to be billion dollar successes. Sure, some of you’re 23 year old dreamers may have the hope of one day growing a company to that size, but that’s way in the future. There are better ways they can start and get their feet wet.
With the the emergence of the internet over the last few decades, it has never been easier to start a business. The costs of launching have dropped significantly to the point where just about anybody can handle the financial costs of setting up their own shop. This my friend, is an exciting time to live, and if with a little guidance from you, you’re child can prosper from it.
In this article, I’d like to share with you 5 top rated courses from the #1 online video course marketplace, Udemy, that will teach you’re recent graduate how launch their own business. Not all these courses teach how to start the same type of business, so hopefully they get some ideas sparked of what type of business you’re son or daughter might want to start today. However, all of these courses are wildly cost efficient, so even if you’re broke 23 year old could probably come up with the spare change (but if not, do them a favor and loan them the cash). The education they’ll receive from these courses are well worth it and nothing like the heavy cost of a college education that you most likely overpaid for!
(As a disclaimer, I have not necessarily been through these courses personally. We are recommending them based on their ratings and the promotional material. Some of the below may contain affiliate links. If you do not wish this website to profit from your purchases, simply look up these courses on your own. We don’t mind, we just want your son or daughter’s success)
William Pena’s Make An Extra $1K-10K Selling On Amazon has been taken by over 6,000 students, and has a strong 5 star rating from it’s community. William is also the author The 3 Day Entrepreneur: How to Build a 6 and 7 Figure Business Working Less Than 3 Days Per Week, and has been a business consultant and success coach for the majority of his entrepreneurial career.
In this course, Pena shares with exactly how you can generate an extra couple thousand dollars each month, working only a couple days a week and for only a few hours each day. He shares how there are a select few types of businesses that allow you to generate substantial monthly income while working very passively, and that selling your own Amazon products is one of those business models.
If you’re son or daughter has had any interest in learning how to leverage the internet’s largest retailer of goods and digital products, this course is worth taking a look at. It’s not the cheapest on this list and retails for $299. Learn more about the course here and share it with your child to see if it’s the right fit.
Sean Marshall started his online marketing services business about 4 years ago and 2 years in he was able to move his family to their dream home off the coast of Mexico. He was able to do this because 1) He started generating enough income from his business and only had to work roughly 10 hours per week and 2) He can run his business from anywhere that has an internet connection.
Now Sean is showing over 2,700 other people who are already taking this course how to duplicate his success by helping people with online marketing. As Sean shares, it’s not as hard as it looks to do online marketing and he shares how to attain the knowledge you’ll need and how to start landing clients to do online marketing for.
Now, I’m not sure what your son or daughter’s are long term; maybe they want to travel the world, or raise income to start a nonprofit or just be able to move out to their own place. But needless to say, starting an online services business is fantastic because it requires no upfront cost and can be set up by anyone who has an internet connection. Sean’s course goes for a measly $99 and I’m not sure when he plans to up that price. If this is something of interest, share it.
This is an interesting course because it teaches how to CREATE your own courses! Phil Ebiner is making over $10K per month teaching people courses on Udemy. What’s cool about Udemy is that you can publish courses on anything. Think about all the skills you’re tuition money taught young Jimmy or Sarah over the last 4-6 years and how they can articulate that to other people. Chances are, they’ve become an expert at a couple different things, whether it be writing and delivering speeches, preparing for tests, building websites, etc.
Take note of some of the skills you’re grad learned and show them how they can possibly leverage the #1 online marketplace for video courses to make some income from those skills!
Now, an important thing to keep in mind is that selling online courses within Udemy is not as easy as it looks. The marketplace has become relatively saturated with instructors over the last few years, meaning you can’t just upload a few videos, tag a price on it and expect people to start flocking in. It takes a more strategic approach to marketing your courses and Phil teaches exactly how to position a course and get it in front of the right people. The course sells for $297, so again, not the cheapest course in the world, but when you consider the results he is promising and has delivered to almost 10,000 other students, it’s well worth it.
(Disclaimer: Creating a course for Udemy and marketing it to the public takes time and work, If you don’t feel your child is willing to put in the work, don’t bother sharing this course with them…or any of these courses for that matter.)
Jeet Banerjee is a good friend of mine and a 22 year old serial entrepreneur. I had the opportunity to interview Jeet a few years ago and he shared with me his full story; how he started and sold his first business at the age of 17 and how he is now working numerous projects that are all blossoming very well.
As someone who is very young and started his business when he was younger than most of you reading this, I feel he will be able to shed some light on the topics on entrepreneurship from a familiar perspective to your recent graduate’s. Jeet is quite the successful startup advisor and founder, so listen to what he has to say. His course resides at $99 as of now, and I believe it will stay at that price for a while, but who knows…
Okay, I’m going to throw a little bit of a curve ball your way…
This course is not hosted by Udemy, like the previous 4 are. However, I wanted to share it with you anyways because it shares a topic that can bring in some solid income as a side business, and it does not require any startup cash to launch. Freelance writing is something a lot of young people are starting to get into, as writing is a skill that many businesses need help with and will pay dearly for it.
