Mark Cuban is regarded as one of the most successful businessmen of all time. He has a thing or two to say about success:
1. Time is more valuable than money
The only thing you cannot get back is time. Time is your most precious asset. We all get the same amount of time every single day, and how you choose to use that time will ultimately decide how successful you are.
2. Commit random acts of kindness
No one becomes successful on their own. We all need help and we all need a network of supporters. So give all you can and be kind for no reason at all. It will come back to you in ways you could have never imagined. Cuban is a big believer in give and you shall receive.
Whether it’s a few bucks to your favorite charity or a few hours of your time volunteering for the Disabled Children’s Center, or maybe just telling someone that you love their smile, commit these small acts of kindness as often as possible.
3. No balls, no babies
When the opportunity is there, take it! You have to have guts and balls. Don’t be stupid, but if you are prepared and you see the risk as smart and worth it, take the chance.
4. Work hard, play hard
This doesn’t mean you have to take lavished vacations every month. Mark Cuban did not take a vacation for 7 years when he was getting started in business. But he did always manage to have fun in what he was doing, working or not, and he always found ways to get away from the office momentarily to blow off steam.
5. Don’t let fear be a roadblock
Fear is in all of us. Losers let fear stop them in their tracks. Successful people let fear inspire their appetites. You are not a loser.
6. Expect the unexpected, and always be ready
Life is unpredictable. So why do so many of us get so upset when a monkey wrench is thrown our way? I mean come on, you knew these things could happen. Life would not be fun if we didn’t run into a few surprises every now and again. I, and Mark Cuban, both strongly believe this.
Don’t worry about things getting in your way. Deal with them, and expect them. Be prepared for the unexpected.
7. It’s okay to yell and be yelled at
Mark Cuban is a very passionate man. If you have ever seen a Mavericks basketball game, you know that.
He and his colleagues and partners have spent a significant amount of time yelling at each other regarding business issues. But that’s okay, because all it did was simply display their passion for the project or issue and they always managed to work it out.
It’s okay to yell and be yelled at. In either case, it represents passion…which is GREAT.
8. Everyone gets down; the key is how soon you get back up
When you fall down, how quick do you get back up? What, did you expect to cruise through life and business without ever hitting any setbacks? Hell, NO!
They happen is business, and in life, no matter who you hang around with or what profession you are in. When you hit setbacks and get pushed down, keep things in perspective. Keep your eye on the bigger picture. And then slowly let your motivation build back up, and get back on that horse.
9. It’s not in the dreaming, it’s in the doing
Dreaming is good, but action is where results are produced. Whenever you find yourself dreaming excessively, ask yourself “Okay, now how are my going to make this a reality?“
10. You only have to be right once
This is my personal favorite mantra from Cuban. He says, “It doesn’t matter how many times you are wrong, you only have to be right once.”
That’s all that people will remember. You could fail 2,871 times and then hit the jackpot and guess what? The jackpot is what you will be remembered for and that’s what will provide you with all you want in life.
No one keeps score. The only thing people care about is THAT ONE TIME you were right.
