Howard Schultz is one the wealthiest men in America. He grew up poor and was the first person in his family to go to college; needless to say, he is not the person you would have expected to build the largest coffee company in the world and amass a net worth of over $1 billion.
As the CEO of Starbucks, Howard has spent the last few decades mastering the art of marketing an amazing product so that people make his product a part of their daily routine. And I’d say he’s done a pretty good job of that, since Starbucks pulls in billions of dollars in revenue each year and pulls in millions of soccer moms, and corporate America workers each morning to get their daily frappuccino.
Enjoy the video below of Howard Schultz’s top 10 tips for business success…
1. Dream big dreams
Howard Schultz literally came from the other side of the tracks, as you’ll hear in the video above. He grew up poor, broken, and disgusted. The only thing that allowed him to propel forward after his rough childhood were his big dreams and hopes throughout his youth and early adulthood.
Starbucks would not be the massive powerhouse that it is today without Howard Schultz’s amazing ability to dream BIG dreams.
2. Change your mindset
Your mindset is the key to your entire success. If you want to reach higher levels in your life, the most important thing for you to focus on is your attitude and mindset. If you have any form of negative thought patterns cycling through your head, it’s a good idea to change those rather quickly, and get some positive thoughts going.
Change your mindset and change your life.
3. Have a heart
I think there has been myth that has been sold to our society over the last few decades that you have to be ruthless and cutthroat to get to the top. Howard Schultz, the billionaire CEO of Starbucks argues that this is not the best strategy.
Instead, you should have a warm heart for everybody and be kind to all you come across. Be kind to your coworkers, colleagues, employees, superiors, etc. If you have a heart for people, you not only will live a more enjoyable, lovely life, but you will also make much faster and bigger leaps in your career because people will be more willing to help you.
4. Celebrate mistakes
In school, the worst thing you can do is make a mistake. If you miss a question on a test, you are penalized. If you shout out the wrong answer in class, it is literally considered “wrong”.
In the real world, the best way to learn and get better is to make mistakes. You have be willing to fail a few times before you start to get the hang of it. In fact, the more mistakes you make in business the better, because it means you are learning “how not to do things” and you are that much closer to finding a successful strategy.
5. Don’t advertise
This is an interesting business tip. Howard Schultz argues that the best way to market your product or service is by designing the best product in the world and letting the people sell it for you. If you create something worth sharing, people will share it and you won’t have to spend a dime on advertising.
This strategy clearly worked for Starbucks, as they are now the most popular coffee shop on the planet and sell billions of frappuccinos per year. This is not to say that this is the best strategy for every business, but it worked for Howard and his company. Take note.
6. Care for your people
This goes back to tip #3. If you are going to have a business, you have to care for the people on your team. You have to truly want the best for them and put them before yourself as much as possible. If you care for your team, they will take care of you and your business.
7. Have strong values
You have to know what you value and hold them sacred. Figure out what it is in your business and life that you value most, and hold them tightly. Live by your values every single day.
These values will seep into your business. For the first time in the history of society, consumers now care about more than just “the product”. They now care about the business as a whole. As an example, people don’t shop at Walmart as much as they used to because of the way Walmart has been known to treat their workers.
People are now looking into more than just the price and product. They want to buy from and support businesses that are making this world a better place.
8. Do what you love
You have to do what you love. I’m sure you’ve heard that one before, eh? Howard Schultz says it perfectly when he says your chances of success are slim if you are not doing what you love to do. It’s hard and it will take time, so choose something you love and you’ll have no reason to quit no matter how tough it gets.
9. Exceed expectations
Try to exceed all expectations that people have of you and your business. People are typically not expecting you to do great things, due to the cynicism in our world and the low success rates in the entrepreneurial world these days.
Make it your goal to exceed all expectations of everyone else and blow everyone’s mind. It will be so rewarding and nobody will ever doubt you again.
10. Stand for something important
This is probably the most important point of all. You’ve got to stand for something important and meaningful. You’ve got to believe in something bigger than yourself and greater than any one person. Once you have that true purpose, you’ll be able to fight through any obstacle that comes your way and you’ll have the world as your oyster.
Nothing will stand in your way because you know what you want and you are going after it full-throttle. You won’t care how long it takes; you’ll be determined to reach your goal regardless.
