A beautiful moment is here again. Let’s clink our glasses in celebration of a wonderful year just started. As entrepreneurs, there is a need for us to pace ourselves and increase our speed in this new year. Enough of just setting goals. It is high time we stopped leaving our lives to be controlled by the devil that is so close to us – Procrastination.
Procrastination hits everyone everywhere, irrespective of your social status or level of education. As no person is immuned against this ‘Thief of Time and Chances’. At different points in our lives, we all have desire to accomplish something, and getting the motivation to do it is not just enough. Procrastination makes easy things hard, and hard things harder.
There are thousands of books and articles that have addressed this phenomenon. Lately, I have sticked to simple rules that are helping me crush this enemy of progress (procrastination). I certainly won’t hesitate to share them with you as they are tested and proven to be effective at this time.
1. MOTIVATE YOURSELF
Most of the tasks we procrastinate on aren’t actually difficult to do. Often time, we have the talent and skills to maximise. Set a target and reward yourself when it is accomplished.
2. AVOID BEING A PERFECTIONIST
But what’s wrong with being perfect? asked my friend. ‘Nothing’, I replied with a smile. ‘As long as it doesn’t harm you’.
Entrepreneurs are undoubtedly adventurous, driven and energetic, with a view of possibility. The down side is that entrepreneurs are also prone to overworking, taking on too much and perfectionism. Most perfectionists tend to be highly critical, often looking for what is wrong. I implore you to set realistic standards and manage your time wisely.
3. RESOLVE TO ACT
It is not enough to plan and set goals. You must rise to start working towards the attainment of the set goals. Draw out a task-table that will comprehensively spell out your step-by-step approach to accomplishing your plans. This particular tip really worked for me in 2014.
4. DISSOCIATE FROM PROCRASTINATORS
There is an African adage that says and I quote “if a leaf is attached to a soap for some time, the leaf itself will be transformed to a soap”. Meaning that the kind of people we associate with determines our lifestyle and approach to things.
If you have been associating with procrastinators, their attitude must have rubbed-off on you (though at different magnitudes). For you to start making your way into a fulfilling year, it is therefore imperative to dissociate from these set of people. This might not be as easy as we are saying it, but you just have to take that bold step to up your game in life.
5. FINISH THE HARD TASK FIRST
As entrepreneurs, we sometimes get discouraged by the complex assignments before us. The problem is always not knowing where exactly to start from. I felt this way many times in the past, but I was able to successfully overcome it by dealing with the hardest parts of the task first. Thus, making the simpler ones a smooth sail for me at the long run.
6. SET TIME LIMIT
Setting time limit is very important in accomplishing set goals. It spurs us to act at the right time and mitigates all forms of distraction (social media, phone, magazines). If properly employed, it will help you to develop self-discipline and stop procrastination.
7. YOU JUST HAVE TO DO IT
At the end, it all boils down to taking action. You can do all the planning and strategizing, but if action is not taken, nothing is going to happen. Whatever it is you are procrastinating, if you want to get it done, you need to rise up, and as they say at Nike: JUST DO IT!
I hope you find this article useful just as it has helped in reshaping my life for the better.
I hold you in high esteem.
