I don’t care if you are an entrepreneur who is just starting out, or a seasoned entrepreneur with (25) fortune 5 companies under your belt; we all have mental challenges to overcome. Anyone who tells you that their mental game is 100% taken care of is just flat out lying to your face.
No one is now, or will they ever be 100% done with their mental challenges in life.
That is why one of my favorite sayings is “The toughest battles you will ever fight are the ones you fight within yourself.” Truer words have seldom been spoken when it comes to entrepreneurs.
But does that mean that you can’t be an entrepreneur?
Does that mean that just because you have some challenges that you can’t or shouldn’t try? The answer is NO!!
What that does mean is that you need to “Recognize” these challenges, “Ponder” these challenges, and put an “Action Plan” in place for how you plan to deal with these challenges when they do present themselves.
Below are 3 mental challenges I’m sure every entrepreneur has had at some time on their adventure to make their dreams a reality. Read them over and let me know your thoughts.
People often ask me why do you feel this is something we have to overcome in this day and age. We have the Internet, Social Media, Friends and Family everywhere. How could you ever be lonely?
To them I say try being an entrepreneur once and you will learn quickly what I mean.
I think that people often forget that as long as you are doing what society says is the norm or is advantageous then you are accepted and viewed in favor of society. But when you don’t do what everyone else does, when you are working towards your own goals, at your own pace and time, or have different objectives than the norm in society, then all of a sudden you are pushed to the outside of society and forced to justify your position in life.
Any time a group pushes you away or out you will feel like you are alone, you will feel like you don’t belong, you will be lonely. But I want you to ponder these two thoughts for a minute…
If you always look at things the same way or if you are always trying to live your life to someone else’s standard, are you really living “Your” life? The answer is NO.
I can’t think of one successful entrepreneur I have ever spoken to that looked at the world the same as everyone else does. How are you supposed to start and build new things if you only see the world as others have always told you that you need to see it?
“Ideas don’t come to masses, they come to individuals.” -Chris Schenk
Have you ever stopped and thought why that is? Because not everyone can think the way you do, not everyone has your background and your experiences to see life the way you do. You can either accept this truth as a gift and use it to change the world, or you can look at it like a curse and try to live a life someone else wants you to live; the life someone else dictates to you. Someone like your boss.
Everyone wants to be a Lion till it’s time for the Lion to do what it does. There are many who pretend to be a Lion in this life. Come on, you know the people I am talking about. These are the people who are all talk but no action.
These are the people who every time you talk to them they are starting something great and new and they are always doing and having the best in life. The only problem is you and everyone else never really sees it.
This is the same with entrepreneurs.
Sometimes people like to say they are an entrepreneur but in reality they really aren’t. They think it’s cool to put on their resume or throw around at parties, but a true entrepreneur knows the difference.
A true entrepreneur knows that there is nothing easy about being an entrepreneur. When it comes time to “Grind”, or work the 20 hour day, or fly to 5 cities in a week to talk to clients, or fly around the world to meet with suppliers so you can turn around an hour later and fly back so you can present at your local chamber of commerces the next day. This is what it means to be a true entrepreneur.
When the tire meets the road and it’s all over but the real, actual, down in the trenches WORK that is when you’ll see who the real entrepreneurs are and who’s just talking about being an entrepreneur.
2. Having a Boss
As much as every Entrepreneur probably never wants to admit it, almost all people have had a boss at some point in their life. It doesn’t matter if you’ve had one for a few hours, or 30 years, we all know what it is like to work for someone else.
For some this is the “Security” and “Direction” they need in their lives.
They need to collect a paycheck every two weeks and they need someone to direct their lives daily as to what time they will come to the office, when they will go to lunch, when they will leave at night to go see their family, what they will do every second between the time they get up in the morning and when they close their eyes at night.
Is this a bad thing? For 80% of the population this is a reality. This is what they need, whether they admit it or not, and their “Boss” knows it.
For an Entrepreneur, this is a death warrant to them mentally, but how many potential entrepreneurs do you know that can’t get past the “security” and “direction” a Boss provides them? I’m here to tell you there are a lot of them.
Is it scary to leave the security of a paycheck every two weeks like clock work? Yes.
Is it scary when all of sudden 24 hours a day becomes “Yours” and no one is telling you to go here, do this, talk to so and so, and you better be here at this time tomorrow? Yes it is.
But do you know why its scary?
Because you have been conditioned your whole life since you were a small child to have a “Boss”.
(Now before I go any further please know I am not saying that children don’t need security and direction. That is not what I am saying at all.)
What I am saying is that in our current society and system, what we have in place is conditioning us and pointing us in the direction to have a boss. I think anyone who sits back and takes an honest look and ponders what I just said will see how we are pointed in that very direction.
For 80% of the population, that is a good thing. But for the other 20%, I want to leave you this thought.
If you want the real challenge of life and you really want to see what you are made of, let me take the boss away, let me take your “security” of a paycheck away, and let me take your daily “direction” away. Let me give you back your 24 hours a day, let me tell you that you can do anything you want to do in this life as long as you are willing to accept “Your” own actions and be responsible for yourself and your actions.
Then let me take you to any street corner in any city of this world, put a dollar in your hand, and whisper in your ear “Now take your Ideas, and make them come to life.”
That my friends is what living is all about. No more comfort zones. No more easy… You have all the tools you need, now go use them, and make your dreams a reality.
3. Time Management
80% of the population is used to someone telling them where to be, when to be there, how to get there, what to do once they get there, when to leave, etc… For 80% of the population this seems to work just fine and they seem to adapt and accept that this as their life.
For an Entrepreneur, this feels like a chain around their neck.
So let me give you 24 hours a day back, let me loosen this chain around your neck. Now what are you going to do?
I don’t care who you are, everyone needs time management in some form or another. As a matter of fact, I would be willing to say that an entrepreneur’s most valuable commodity is “Time”.
But what’s the secret on how to manage “Your” time the best? I’ve talked to entrepreneurs who have their calendar set and know what they will be doing 6 months from now at 10:30 in the morning. I’ve also talked to entrepreneurs who have their days broken down into 15 minute blocks and they execute on that with precision daily.
Let me be completely honest with you: There isn’t one best way to manage “your” time because everyone is different. What works best for you might not work for someone else. Period. But what is important is that you have a time management system in place that works for “You” and your lifestyle.
I believe that once you truly realize and understand the value of time, you will never waste another minute of it again.
I love to talk to the 80% of the population who work 9 to 5 and listen to them tell me about how disciplined they are. I think there is a big difference between “Structured” and “Disciplined”.
Structured is what the 80% is all about. You get up at this time, so you can be to work at this time. You have meetings from this time to this time. You eat your lunch from this time to this time. You are allowed to leave at this time. Then you go home and have dinner with your family from this time to this time. Then you go back up and login on your laptop from this time to this time. Then you go to sleep at this time so you can get up at this time and repeat this same thing all over tomorrow.
Believe me, I know I used to think this same exact way.
Now let me show you the difference. If I don’t have anyone telling me I have to do anything. If I don’t have the security of a paycheck coming in every two weeks, and if I don’t have anywhere I need to be at any certain time today, then why should I even get out of bed?
Why shouldn’t I sleep till noon everyday and get up and play Xbox till 7:00pm at night and then just go back to sleep and do whatever I feel like doing the next day?
“Discipline” is the reason why I don’t do those things.
I have 3 short quotes hanging in my office that I read daily. Let me share them with you.
Get up and “Grind” everyday!! – This is the old shark mentality, once you stop moving forward as a shark you die. As an entrepreneur when you stop “Grinding”, “Hustling”, “Pushing”, whatever you want to call it, today is the day you need to start looking for a Boss.
Because as an entrepreneur no one, and I repeat “No One” is going to ever hand you anything. If you want it, you have to go get it!! Period.
“You” won’t be out worked for “Your” dreams. – What’s the difference between the people who achieve their goals in life and those that don’t? WORK… Yes I said the EVIL word in today’s society.
But let’s be honest for a minute. Who should work harder than “You” for your dreams? No one but You. If it’s “Your” dream then go out and make it happen, go out and grab it with both hands and refuse to let go.
Don’t you ever quit on yourself!
Your Dream is “Your” dream; no one is going to help you achieve “Your” dreams!!
If you sit around all day waiting for the perfect time, or perfect place, or perfect situation to happen for you to go get your dream, let me let you in on a secret… IT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!!
If you think someone is going to hand you “Your” dream, or that they are going to give you a break, or out of the kindness of their heart they are going to give you a million dollars to make your dreams come true, you are dead wrong and you are only lying to yourself.
But let me tell what one secret is to achieving your dreams… Stand up right now.
Go to your bathroom, or closet, or any place you have a mirror.
Look in the mirror and see what you see.
Who do you see in that mirror looking back at you? “YOU”!!
Now you know what you need to make any dream in your life come true.
Now you know when the perfect time to get started is… NOW!!
Now you know where the perfect place is to start… Right Here, Right Now!!
Now you know the perfect situation and the perfect person to help you achieve any goal you have in life… It’s “YOU”!!
So do me a favor… The next time you are sitting around feeling sorry for yourself or you start making excuses for why you can’t do this or can’t do that, get up, go into the bathroom, closet, or any place that has a mirror and just stand there and take a good long, hard look at yourself and ask yourself…
“Why am I quiting on myself?”
Keep asking yourself that question till you can’t stand to hear it anymore, till it makes you mad to hear yourself say it, then turn out the light, step out into the real world, and take some “ACTION” to make your dreams come true.
I know you can master these mental challenges.
I know there is no obstacle that you can’t overcome.
I know there is nothing you can’t do if you put your mind to it and you refuse to quit on yourself.
So next time you have a challenge, instead of thinking to yourself what happens if I fail to achieve my dreams, think to yourself “Who’s Going To Stop Me?”.
