My wife and I were having a discussion recently about a motorcycle training course. We had both taken this course but I had completed it 18 years prior to my wife. We were laughing with each other because of a common instruction that was given by our instructors.
Just prior to the riding portion of the course the instructor called everyone’s attention and made the following statement. “As you begin riding I will be shouting out instructions to everyone. Please pay attention to the instructions but do not look at me as I am speaking. This will cause you to turn in my direction and run into me.”
My wife and I were laughing because in both our courses the instructors had to move out of people’s way while they were giving instructions or they would get hit. This still occurred even with the clear instructions that were given to the riders.
This phenomenon happens to people every day.As a person that is constantly seeking out new information on growing your capacity for success, you run across articles and videos that tell you to keep your eye on the goal and have a vision of what you want to accomplish.
Much like the rider on a motorcycle this all makes sense but when you are in the middle of learning, how do you manage to think about the goal and the current situation? I wanted to provide some clarity around this subject to help you along your journey. Here are 3 important ways to focus on each day to begin to bring together your vision and your current reality…
1. Focusing on the goal is done through intention
When you establish a vision for yourself or business, it is often unclear what the steps are to make that vision become reality. It is much easier to envision who you will be when you are living your vision. This is when “intent of action” comes into play.
Intent of action is simply when you take action on a choice you have made what is your true intent. During a period when you are struggling because you are facing new challenges, or changing your current situation, you must be acting with the intention of being your vision.
When you come to a point of contention with who you are now and the person you want to be this is when the “intent of action” will move you forward or keep you where you are. Always choose to conduct yourself in an authentic manner that keeps you headed towards your vision.
2. Owning your current situation
Once you are able to understand the difference between how you conduct yourself today, and who you want to be in the future in order to live your vision, you must embrace your current situation. This can be difficult because everything around you has come to you as a function of who you have been.
One important piece of knowledge to remember is that you created your current situation unconsciously. Think of what you can create now with a clear intention on who you will be. Prepare yourself each day to stay true to who you truly are.
3. Be honest and compassionate with yourself
One of the largest roadblocks you will encounter when focusing your daily choices using intention is that you will do things wrong, and have to go back and do them again. It may be a conversation, learning a new skill in order to achieve your goal, or dissolving an existing relationship.Always ask yourself “how would the person I am meant to be deal with this? If you didn’t or couldn’t conduct yourself in that way be compassionate with yourself.
Remember you are learning to be your authentic self, and it can be difficult. As long as you recognize that you didn’t act in the desired way and go back and do a “do over” you will be successful. Learning to conduct yourself authentically when others may not be can be difficult. As you know nothing worth doing was ever easy.
These 3 focuses are designed to get you where you are going. They will also begin to reveal to you what you were always meant to do. To further help, go back to the free eBook “First Steps to Creating Personal Success” and complete you vision and core values. Also use the journaling tool to record how you did against your vision and values each day. Together, these tools and perspective will move you along your path to success.
True success is not a gamble or game of chance. Others around you will always have reasons to doubt their abilities and potential. They lack the skills and understanding to truly make sustainable changes. Success is a complete change in perspective and orientation.
